Revised UGC NET Eligibility Criteria - Who gets the benefit?

The notification of scrapping the biannual nature of NET exam came as a shock for thousands of students. NET aspirants & student unions are busy making noise against the curtail of biannual UGC NET exam, which was supposed to be held in July 2017.

There is a pleasant notice by UGC that seeped quietly among all this hotchpotch.

UGC(University Grant Commission) has revised the eligibility criteria & exam dates for the NET exam November session.

UGC NET Eligibility benefits for unreserved

According to the revised UGC NET eligibility criteria,  top 6% candidates, who will appear in exam will be considered pass. It will increase the number of  candidates clearing the exam. Till now, top 15% candidates who scored more than minimum qualifying marks in all three papers in their were considered qualified in NET exam. Apart from this, new examination date for the upcoming CBSE NET examination will be 5th November 2017(earlier it was 19th November 2017).

Why UGC NET Exam Pattern Has Changed ?

If you look at the past year trends, every year 4-5% candidates were clearing the NET exam on an average. After adopting the top 15% criteria & minimum marks, the no. of candidates qualifying the exam decreased drastically. So, UGC decided to adopt the new top 6% criteria keeping in mind the equal opportunities for each category, specially unreserved candidates.

Due to the moderate policies of UGC, in past 20 years very few unreserved category candidates cracked UGC NET. After the intervention of Kerala High Court, UGC created a uniform criterion for qualifying the exam. It is noteworthy that on the petition of G Sukumaran Nair, Kerala court mandated this historical verdict.

About the Exam: On behalf of UGC, CBSE(Central Board of Secondary Education) conducts lectureship eligibility test for the 84 arts & humanities subjects. Earlier this exam was conducted twice a year, in July & December respectively, but due to the low attendance of candidates the examination committee & HRD decided to scrap its biannual nature & unanimously agreed on yearly examination scheme. The online application process will commence from 1st August 2017. Last date of submission shall be 31st August.

Check the revised UGC NET eligibility criteria. It is a welcoming decision by UGC & examination committee who considered the equal opportunity for the unreserved category students after the petition filed in Kerala High Court.
